The premise

Here’s the bit.

After a kickabout in the park, a curly-haired divorced father takes his young son to a cafe before returning him to his mother. When the boy asks why his grandmother died, the dad begins with a gentle explanation about ageing bodies, then calmly reveals that Granny was a heavy drinker: her mints were meant to mask the booze, her lively singing and dancing were symptoms of alcohol-related dementia, and a single morning's binge on coffee liqueur finally finished off her liver. He adds a ghoulish thought about what might have happened at a cremation, then cheerfully asks which ice-cream flavour his son wants.

Say it with us

Highly quotable.

Well, that was alcoholic dementia.

And then one morning she drank very nearly an imperial gallon of Tia Maria and her poor little old liver just gave up the ghost.

If we cremated her, she'd have burnt with a blue flame like a great big Christmas pudding.

A little extra
