The premise

Here’s the bit.

Hugh greets his local shopkeeper with exaggerated cheer and presents a modest shopping basket. A supposedly sudden thirst draws him to the cheapest strong lager, which he treats as an intriguing discovery. As his money proves insufficient, the food and newspaper give way to a second can. John quietly indulges the familiar performance while Hugh maintains his respectable facade.
