Bobo the Monkey
The setup
The premise
Here’s the bit.
In a 1960s mission-control room, the head scientist gathers his team to celebrate the first successful launch of a living animal into space and to honour their test pilot, Bobo the monkey, who cannot be brought home because there is not enough fuel. The memorial goes awry when Bobo switches on the communications link and appears on the big screen, waving and signing at the staff. The head scientist orders everyone to turn their backs on the monitor, but his team grows more attached, swapping private jokes with the monkey and pleading to rescue him. Worn down, he agrees to stay late on a Friday to work out a way to bring Bobo back and sends everyone home for the weekend. Alone at the console, he resets the capsule's coordinates and sends Bobo off toward the sun, closing on a mournful song about the monkey's fate.

Say it with us
Highly quotable.
By putting a living animal into space, we've taken a huge first step into beating the Ruskies to the moon.
But I am not happy about having to work late on a Friday to do this.
Have fun on the sun, Bobo.

Head Scientist
Okay. Okay. Everybody gather around. Gather around. I'd like to take a moment and congratulate each and every one of you on a successful mission. By putting a living animal into space, we've taken a huge first step into beating the Ruskies to the moon. I'd also like to take a moment and remember our brave test pilot, Bobo the monkey. Bobo was an exceptional monkey, and I know that many of us here began to regard him as not just an animal, but as an associate. To Bobo.

Now, as you know, we don't have enough fuel to safely bring Bobo back to Earth. But I want everyone to rest assured that Bobo's sacrifice to this great nation will go down in the annals of history, and he will truly never be forgotten.

Scientist ?
Oh. Oh, um, oh, it's Bobo.

Head Scientist ?
He must have accidentally turned on the monitor. I'm sorry, I got this, guys. Hi, Bobo. Yeah, good to see you. Hey, good job with that mission there. That was really, okay. I'm sorry about that. Look, I know this is very hard on everybody, but if anything, it's a testament to how intelligent Bobo really was that he figured out how to use our communications monitor. Bobo. Okay, you know what? I'm sorry. Uh, Bobo, uh, can we do something about... Can we kill Bobo's monitor?
- 01:46
Scientist ?
Aw.
- 01:48
Head Scientist
You know what? Everyone, turn around. Turn around. Don't look at him. Don't encourage him. Everybody turn around. Turn around.
- 01:55
Scientist ?
He's hungry.
- 01:56
Head Scientist ?
No, no he's not hungry. He's he's just that sign language for goodbye. I'm fine up here in space. Don't worry about me Okay, can we kill his feet? Bobo, okay. Look everyone. This is not helping. Oh my god.
- 02:12
Scientist ?
Big box apples for you too, buddy.
- 02:14
Head Scientist ?
What what does that mean?
- 02:16
Scientist ?
It's just this inside joke that me and him had
- 02:20
Scientist ?
Come on, there's gotta be a way we can get him back here.
- 02:22
Scientist ?
Yeah, Bobo will do the same for us A scientist type's got to stick together.
- 02:26
Scientist ?
Bobo!
- 02:29
Head Scientist
