The premise

Here’s the bit.

After a day out in the park, a curly-haired divorced father finds his son Paul still awake in bed and coaxes out what is bothering him: every boy in his class except Paul has been invited to a birthday party. Instead of offering comfort, the dad gently and sincerely explains that the problem is Paul himself, cataloguing how dull his stories are and how little impression he makes on anyone, before admitting that even he forgets his son's face a few days after each weekend visit. Having delivered the verdict, he cheerfully offers a bedtime drink and then can't remember how Paul takes it.

Say it with us

Highly quotable.

It's just you are quite boring.

Let's face it, you're never going to get work as an after-dinner speaker.

By Wednesday, even I have trouble remembering what you look like.

A little extra

Notes from the archive.

Tyger Drew-Honey, who plays Paul, was also starring as Jake Brockman in the BBC One sitcom Outnumbered, which premiered in August 2007, a few months before this episode aired.

The rabbit hole continues

One more couldn’t hurt.
