The premise

Here’s the bit.

Paul walks into a shoe store and asks the clerk, Evan, for help finding a pair. Evan answers every simple question with florid, faintly ominous pronouncements, quizzes Paul about how fast he plans to go, and drifts into a wistful speech about music, laughter and the sea that left him here selling shoes. He flatly refuses to look for another size, takes offence at the request, and seals the sale only once Paul settles for brown. Triumphant, Evan proclaims his calling, and a flaming Satan appears to confirm that he will be selling shoes forever, leaving Evan clutching a shoe in grateful glee.

Say it with us

Highly quotable.

I guess I'm Evan to you now.

I am quite well stocked in the color of cowards.

Thank you, Satan!

A little extra

Notes from the archive.

Fan uploads of this sketch circulate under the title "Satanic Salesman". The whistled "Bellini" theme plays as Evan leads Paul around the shoe display.

The rabbit hole continues
