Halloween with Janeane Garofalo
The setup
The premise
Here’s the bit.
Alex Borstein plays Janeane Garofalo answering her door to a princess, a cowboy and an astronaut. Introducing herself as the voice of her generation, she mocks their costumes as the second-biggest cliché going and boasts that she went trick-or-treating as a famous linguist when she was their age. Then she settles onto a stool under a spotlight with a microphone and turns the doorstep into a stand-up set, grumbling that Halloween has become a pre-packaged excuse for grown frat boys to misbehave. When the kids tell her she isn't funny, she insists she is caustic and ironic rather than trying to be funny, and the unimpressed children wander off and leave her talking.

Highly quotable.
No, I'm Janeane Garofalo, voice of my generation, comic genius.
When I was your age, I went as Noam Chomsky.
I'm not trying to be funny, okay? I'm caustic and ironic.
A little extra
Notes from the archive.
This was one of five trick-or-treating doors in the episode's Halloween runner; the others belonged to Cher, Enrique Iglesias, Macy Gray and Angelina Jolie.
