The premise

Here’s the bit.

While his boss gives him an office tour, new employee Ray meets researcher Dick, who flashes an unnerving grin and starts talking straight into Ray's head. Dick explains that all Black people have the shine, a riff on The Shining, but Ray grew up in a white neighborhood and has never been tuned in. Once connected, he is flooded by a chorus of famous voices, from Kobe Bryant and Denzel Washington to Lil Jon and President Obama, while the oblivious boss keeps chatting. A soothing Morgan Freeman voice coaches him to calm down, until Dick slips back into his mind with a sinister instruction about the white man standing in front of him.

Highly quotable.

Glad to see there's another brother in this stuffy place.

You never shined with another Black person before?

Now pick up that letter opener and kill that white man.

A little extra

Notes from the archive.

Peele's character Dick is a nod to Dick Hallorann, the psychic hotel cook in Stephen King's The Shining. The sketch aired in Key & Peele's 2012 Halloween episode.
