The setup
The premise
Here’s the bit.
Hot 97 DJ Funkmaster Flex introduces Fisticuff, a rapper he says runs the streets, and promotes his hit single "Turn My Headphones Up." In the vocal booth, Fisticuff (Dave Chappelle) keeps launching into a verse and then stopping every take to demand more volume in his left headphone, more bass or treble, a different beat drop or a glass of water, berating the engineer at the mixing desk while never actually rapping. Street testimonials from fans and Big Tigger vouch for his menace and his record sales, Fisticuff works a packed club crowd, and Flex claims the lyrics are so good they do not need to rhyme. The piece wraps up as a mock advertisement for the album on Headphone Records.
