The premise

Here’s the bit.

Captured Confederates Sam and Trevor wait at the execution posts of a Union camp when their friend Doug is marched in beside them, caught answering nature's call too close to enemy lines. His rambling account lets slip that Robert E. Lee has an army massed just over the ridge for a dawn raid, so the pair cheerfully announce they have switched sides and try to warn a hard-drinking General Grant, who waves them off and orders the firing squad to begin. Once Doug has been shot and a Union scout confirms the enormous Confederate force, Grant despairs and tells everyone to flee, until Sam and Trevor stop the stampede by promising they know how he can beat Lee.
