The premise

Here’s the bit.

Sent to fetch drinks for his wife's friends, a man in a blazer describes each guest to the barman by appearance along with what they want, starting with a large gin and tonic for himself. Each time he tries to read the order back, he downs another gin and the descriptions and drinks swap places, until the guests' looks and the drinks are hopelessly scrambled. He finally cancels everything and issues a brand-new garbled order, and the barman obligingly hands over exactly what he asked for, rocks, an enormous lemon and a scantily dressed showgirl included.

Say it with us

Highly quotable.

Yeah, if there's room in the glass, yes.

My wife will have an old man on the rocks.

I'm glad we finally got that sorted out.

A little extra

Notes from the archive.

Barman Michael Redfern later became familiar to British viewers as the father in the long-running OXO stock-cube commercials. IMDb also lists Aileen Lewis, uncredited, as one of the women at the bar.
