The premise

Here’s the bit.

Kevin Nealon hands over to Adam Sandler, who explains that his schedule will keep him away from the family Thanksgiving this year. His solution is to have his father record the segment so a TV set can take his usual seat at the table and play him back during dinner. Sandler pulls up a tray of turkey and fixings and starts performing his half of the conversation: praising his mother's bird, politely refusing more food and growing irritated when she keeps offering it. A remark from his unseen father reopens a decade-old grievance, and the one-sided argument escalates until Sandler is brandishing his cutlery, daring his dad to come at him, flipping the tray off the desk and breaking down in tears. Nealon suggests it might be time to stop the tape and wishes viewers a happy holiday as Sandler gets in one last screamed outburst.

Highly quotable.

Dad, that was ten years ago! I said I was sorry, and the only one who still brings it up is you!

The tables are turning, man. I ain't afraid of you no more.

Stop treating me like a two-year-old!

Notes from the archive.

This aired on the Saturday before Thanksgiving 1991, four weeks after Sandler's first Weekend Update holiday advice segment of the season, his Halloween costume ideas.

WELL, Thanksgiving dinner has always been a big deal in my house. And every year I try to make it home to celebrate with the family. But this year, due to my busy schedule, I can't make it. So right now, I'm going to ask my dad to put a cassette in the VCR and record this. Then he can put the TV in my usual place at the dinner table and play it back at Thanksgiving to recreate the illusion that I'm dining with the family.
