The premise

Here’s the bit.

Dean is serving time in a maximum-security prison, where he shrugs off a yard enforcer's debt with another casual promise and ties up the only phone while a condemned inmate waits in vain for the governor's call. When Lex visits, Dean asks him to bake a cake with a saw hidden inside and swears he will keep him out of trouble. Lex's delivery sets off the metal detector, so the cake ends up at a birthday party in the warden's office, where Lex's rudeness to the warden leads straight to the hidden saw. Dean promptly names Lex as the culprit. Locked in the same cell, Lex learns that Dean is being released that afternoon anyway, and Dean strolls out with his suitcase, promising to visit.

Highly quotable.

It was Lex Hair who put the saw in the cake.

Oh, did I? It must have slipped my mind.

A little extra

Notes from the archive.

A follow-up to The King of Empty Promises, again pairing Kevin McDonald's unreliable Dean Deen with Dave Foley's long-suffering Lex Hair.

The rabbit hole continues
