The premise

Here’s the bit.

After a pot-roast dinner, Eunice tries to keep a rare pleasant evening going by coaxing Ed, who calls Sorry! a baby game, and Mama, who would rather sulk behind a tabloid, to the kitchen table. Eunice polices the rules while the dice refuse to cooperate, Mama makes a show of deferring before settling on the blue men, and Ed gleefully knocks Eunice's pieces back to start while Mama declines to land on him. A squabble over which yellow man Mama moved, and how far, explodes into Eunice airing years of resentment about Ed's indifference and Mama's favoritism, and she hurls the game across the room. Ed and Mama answer with a volley of colorful jabs about her sanity, the fight veers back to a childhood feud with Eunice's sister Ellen over a doll, and just as Eunice swears off trying to please Mama, she rolls double sixes and happily dives back into the game.

Highly quotable.

Well, I think I'll just move this little blue fella who's saying, "Move me, I'm bored standing here."

You ain't playing with a full deck, Eunice.

You got splinters in the windmills of your mind.

A little extra

Notes from the archive.

This was the fourth installment of "The Family" and the first built around one of the board-game battles the sketch became known for; the family later fought over Monopoly in a 1976 installment.

The rabbit hole continues

One more couldn’t hurt.
