The setup

On a stiff black-and-white panel game, four distinguished guests labour to deduce how many hats a contestant is wearing, though the answer sits plainly on her head.

The premise

Here’s the bit.

A dinner-jacketed host welcomes viewers to How Many Hats and introduces his panel: pop idol Ricky Stone, broadcaster and magistrate Lady Margaret, Sir Geoffrey Whiting and Benjamin Graham, a humorist making his debut. The first contestant, Mrs Alfred Daly of St Albans, sits beside the host with three hats stacked on her head, yet the regulars approach the puzzle like a cryptic parlour game, asking whether the number is odd, has two digits or is prime while the scoreboard counts their misses. Bewildered that nobody will state the obvious, newcomer Benjamin finally blurts out the answer and earns the panel its point. When the next contestant, Mr Cyril Jacobs, arrives wearing a single trilby, the panel erupts, the studio dissolves into a scuffle, and the broadcast cuts away to a BBC tuning signal, an apology for technical problems and a stand-in photograph of Princess Margaret.

Say it with us

Highly quotable.

Is the number of hats you're wearing, perchance, a prime number?

It's obvious. We can all see it. She's got three hats on.

Until we can return you to the programme, here's a picture of Princess Margaret.

The rabbit hole continues

One more couldn’t hurt.
