The premise
Here’s the bit.
John Garrison is strapped into an electric chair as an officer prepares to carry out his sentence at midnight. A ringing telephone interrupts the final countdown, and the prisoner brightens as the officer describes the extraordinary timing of the call. The apparent last-minute rescue collapses when the officer reveals who was actually on the line.
