Airport Sushi
The setup
The premise
Here’s the bit.
At a LaGuardia Airport newsstand, a customer adds a packaged spicy tuna roll to his purchase, horrifying his friend and the clerk. The clerk summons the Phantom of LaGuardia, a masked figure who turns out to be one of the geese from the Miracle on the Hudson, and the terminal's sushi chef joins a warning song about what the roll will do mid-flight. The number swells into a medley of Broadway parodies: the staff, a rat and a flight attendant celebrate the airport's endless delays, an Auntie Anne's worker styled after Little Orphan Annie blames the mayor for everything, an unaccompanied baby wanders through security, and a traveler in pajamas sings about how much he enjoys being searched. A gate agent announces an impossible gate change, a passenger with a mask around his chin insists he is not sick, and a baggage handler played by David Byrne leads the whole terminal in a reworked version of his song "Road to Nowhere."

Highly quotable.
You're buying sushi at LaGuardia Airport? Have you lost your damn mind?
Miracle on the Hudson? More like massacre in the sky.
That's where everyone at LaGuardia is going, like it or not.

Notes from the archive.
The third of John Mulaney's New York musical sketches on Saturday Night Live, after Diner Lobster and Bodega Bathroom. Its medley borrows from The Phantom of the Opera, West Side Story and Annie, and musical guest David Byrne closes it with an airport version of the Talking Heads song "Road to Nowhere."
