The premise

Here’s the bit.

After sitting through yet another nearly empty gig, Fred and Carrie pitch CMFB, a venue that exists only so loyal friends can endure local bands without guilt. Stagehands wave crowd-shaped cutouts in front of blinding lights and smoke so the performers think the room is packed, while the friends slip away to hidden lounges and computer desks to answer email. A merch attendant fakes a rush of sales, and Fred and Carrie promise to spread word of the triumphant show. The illusion nearly cracks when the lead singer of Ana and the Pals asks whether this is that fake club she has heard about, but Fred and Carrie insist it is completely legit.

Say it with us

Highly quotable.

Have you ever gone to see your friend's band and you just end up feeling sorry for them?

We've created a space that looks crowded all the time from the stage.

We have a system in place to ensure that your friend's band thinks they sold a lot of merchandise.

A little extra

Notes from the archive.

IFC posted this sketch online on February 20, 2017, three days before the episode aired. Lead singer Ana Fabrega had started working with Fred Armisen around Portlandia in 2016 and later co-created the HBO series Los Espookys with him.
