The premise

Here’s the bit.

In a cavernous lair, a caped supervillain warns a gathering of officials, a military officer and foreign dignitaries that his death ray will wipe out the planet unless his demands are met. The menace collapses once he explains the weapon will take 56 years to charge. His audience agrees the end of the world would still be terrible, yet nobody can summon any urgency: they swap confessions about working better with deadlines, plead that their schedules are already overloaded, and end up thanking him for the wake-up call while ignoring his demand for payment. Left alone with his machine, the exasperated villain decides that humanity has earned its slow doom.

Say it with us

Highly quotable.

The second I pull this lever, the death ray will charge and the entire world will be annihilated in 56 years.

It's just difficult to get up a sense of urgency with that as a time frame.

Like, personally, I'm better with a deadline.
