The setup

The premise

Here’s the bit.

In a mail-order commercial for Liberty Records, flag-draped country singer Darlene McBride explains what she is thankful for and offers a holiday collection celebrating the settlers who drove Native Americans off their land. Between snippets of upbeat tracks, an announcer rattles off a list of song titles built on crude stereotypes, and Darlene pauses to share her own sincere, wildly ignorant asides about history. The joke is the gap between her wholesome Americana presentation and the bigotry baked into every song, which escalates until a final sitar-backed number lets her insult yet another group.
