The premise

Here’s the bit.

In a grimy medieval street, a peasant woman hands her dead husband over to the man carting bodies to the plague pit, then wonders aloud where the disease comes from. He answers with a cheerful musical number explaining how fleas carry the infection from rats to people, listing the gruesome stages of the illness in a refrain that the corpses piled on his cart punctuate with sound effects. He moves on to the expensive and revolting remedies of the day and the toll the plague takes on children and the wider population, until the dead climb down to dance along with him before dropping lifeless once more as he goes back to calling for bodies.

Notes from the archive.

The cast performed an extended reprise of the song at the 2011 Horrible Histories children's Prom at the Royal Albert Hall, although that reprise was left out of the televised special.
