The premise

Here’s the bit.

Hit with a five-million-pound Lloyd's bill, Tim Nice-But-Dim watches his cards, house, car and even his parents' homes vanish, along with his engagement to Emma. Reduced to living under a flyover, he is talked into buying a cardboard box from a fellow tramp, then learns that his old chum Charlie escaped the crash by quietly passing his own liabilities on to some unsuspecting idiot, and is now off to see Emma. After a feeble attempt to end it all, Tim is rescued by the Lloyd's man, who decides that someone utterly incapable of noticing anything is exactly the right person to lead the market's internal fraud inquiry. Nine months later Tim has uncovered nothing, not even the location of his own office, and still thinks Charlie is a thoroughly good egg.
