The setup

The Coopers insist no proper English home is complete without a pet, so a visit from the Robinsons and their pampered lapdog turns into a contest of animal-loving Britishness.

The premise

Here’s the bit.

Charlotte and Dennis Cooper welcome St John and Vanessa Robinson for drinks, and Dennis promptly mistakes the furry bundle in Vanessa's arms for a muff. It is her cherished little dog, saddled with an absurdly aristocratic name, and both couples set about proving how British they are through their devotion to animals. Asked whether they keep pets themselves, the Coopers boast about the hundreds of furry friends living under their floorboards, which turn out to be the mice Dennis sets traps for. His dislike of the dog keeps leaking through the small talk, from cheerful jokes about how she was spayed to his refusal to hold her, until Charlotte forces the issue and the nervous animal has an accident on him. Dennis excuses himself, then returns keen to borrow the dog again, for a purpose that has nothing to do with making friends.

Highly quotable.

This is Lady Penelope Underskirt Gobbler the Third.

Yes, they live under the floorboards.

No, I ran out of toilet paper, actually.
