The premise

Here’s the bit.

The Robinsons are startled to find their rivals Dennis and Charlotte Cooper at their village local, where both couples insist that a pint at the pub comes naturally to people as peculiarly British as themselves. Dennis mistakes an offer of real ale for a remark about his trousers and orders pints of cobblers, a request for a yard of vodka becomes six inches, and St John returns with a roast beef lunch while the group rhapsodise about cricket on the green, cream teas and every other cliche of rural England. When a burly regular objects to their presence and a neighbour tells them to go back where they came from, the couples decide the trouble must be that they are outsiders from Chigwell. Convinced they are about to be lynched, they start praying, and are rescued when a Black man walks into the pub and the regulars turn their hostility on him instead.

Say it with us

Highly quotable.

Yes, and we are peculiarly British.

Well, they don't do a yard of vodka, so I thought six inches would be enough.

And what could be more English than a pub lunch?

A little extra
