The premise

Here’s the bit.

In this send-up of the film noir Laura, Lieutenant Ferguson takes over the investigation into Flora’s murder at her apartment, where he trades barbs with the pompous columnist Waldo and the combative cleaning woman Tessy, who accuses him of falling for the dead woman through her portrait and her theme music. Flora then walks in alive, indignant at the news, and identifies the body as her former roommate. As the detective and Flora fall into each other’s arms, a jealous Waldo returns with a shotgun, and the struggle leaves him and Flora sprawled on the floor. The wounded pair and Ferguson join in a mournful song about life’s small disappointments before Flora dies and the detective turns his attention to Tessy, now in a maid’s uniform.

Say it with us

Highly quotable.

I hate cops. I spit at cops.

Who would want to murder a glorious creature like me?

You’re what I’ve been searching for all my life. A man with the same theme song.

A little extra

Notes from the archive.

A parody of the 1944 film noir Laura, with Carol Burnett in Gene Tierney’s role. The official YouTube clip labels it season 9, episode 13, but TheTVDB and IMDb list this Steve Lawrence episode as season 9, episode 15 (December 20, 1975).
