The premise

Here’s the bit.

Fresh from explaining a breakfast-table crime with a ridiculous solution, Holmes confesses that Watson himself remains a mystery: why has the doctor spent years trailing him from case to case, asking the wrong questions and backing the wrong suspect? Touched by Watson's shy admission of affection, Holmes rewards his loyalty by inviting him onto first-name terms and patiently coaxes the reluctant doctor through saying it, only for Watson to answer with an unexpectedly intimate offer of his own.

Say it with us

Highly quotable.

I knew, conversely, that all along, Professor Moriarty had been cunningly disguised as a blueberry pancake.

I should like for you in the future to address me as Sherlock.

If you like, er, you can call me Priscilla.

A little extra

Notes from the archive.

Part of the episode's salute to movie detectives, with guest Anthony Newley as Holmes opposite Harvey Korman's Watson. The official clip labels it season 7, episode 13 and its description wrongly names Jonny Lee Miller, but TheTVDB and IMDb list this episode, with guests Anthony Newley and Dick Martin, as season 7, episode 14 (December 22, 1973), whose numbering the catalog follows.

The rabbit hole continues

One more couldn’t hurt.
