Breakfast News: Food Prices Emails
The setup
The premise
Here’s the bit.
After teasing an upcoming item on bird flu, the Breakfast News sofa presenters Mike and Jenny catch up with viewers' emails on the price of food. The early messages are merely inane, from a viewer baffled that some foods cost more than others to one relieved that she dislikes the aubergines whose price she is complaining about. Then Clive, a farmer from Malmesbury, starts replying to the viewers who blame farmers, and each new email trades sharper insults with women in Ipswich and Godalming and a man defending one of them. The presenters keep reading in the same bright tone as Clive announces he is loading his shotgun and setting off to kill his correspondents and then himself, before cheerfully urging viewers to keep the emails coming.

Highly quotable.
Some food items cost a lot more than others. That can't be right in a democracy.
Have you seen the price of aubergines? It's a scandal. Luckily, I don't like aubergines.
Clive is insulting the woman I love. He's a typical farmer, i.e. a lout.
A little extra
Notes from the archive.
The same episode contains two more Breakfast News viewer-email installments: one about speed cameras and the weather-forecast sketch Sacrifice the Weatherman.
The rabbit hole continues
One more couldn’t hurt.
