The premise

Here’s the bit.

Big Jim McBob and Billy Sol Hurok open their rural movie show by giving their guest, actress Brooke Shields, a lukewarm grade on her looks. She stumbles on her entrance, offers a fruit-themed pun as proof of her comedy chops, and answers the hosts' questions about movies with blank shrugs. Before her song she repeatedly makes the pair promise not to blow her up, citing her mother's strict instructions. The performance ends the way everyone but Brooke expected, and the delighted hosts turn to their celebrity band while explaining that their explosions are applied without favoritism.

Say it with us

Highly quotable.

If you weren't so fresh last night, we wouldn't be in this jam.

My mother distinctly said there will be no blowing up of Brooke.

We blow up anybody, regardless of their race, creed, or talent.

A little extra

Notes from the archive.

Originally broadcast on 12 February 1982. In the original airing the segment continued with a performance by The Boomtown Rats; that portion was cut from syndicated versions and is not included in this clip.

The rabbit hole continues

One more couldn’t hurt.
