Serial: The Christmas Surprise
The setup
The premise
Here’s the bit.
In a moody true-crime audio-documentary parody, a podcast host in headphones reopens a Christmas morning in 1999 when a boy found a toy with no tag or receipt and his mother insisted she hadn't bought it. The host interviews the self-described toy maker Chris over a prepaid call from the North Pole, quizzes a skeptical UPS driver about whether one night's deliveries are even possible, and tries to prove the point with a homemade sleigh and a small horse. She then turns to an elf witness who took the stand in an earlier trial, and finishes with a cliffhanger tease for next week and a mail-service sponsor spot.
The funny people
Meet the cast. 7
Say it with us
Highly quotable.
Yo, regular people can't just make a reindeer fly.
If he says he can do it, he's lying.
It should be noted that Chris is part of a population who identify themselves as elves.

- 00:06
I want you to think about things you can't see.
- 00:10
The rotation of the planets, electricity, gravity.
- 00:14
Because we only see the results and not the process,
- 00:18
should we come to the conclusion that it doesn't exist?
- 00:22
I'm Sarah Koenig.
- 00:23
On December 25th, 1999, a small boy awoke in Baltimore, Maryland.
- 00:29
He went down to his living room and found a Nerf N-Strike Mega Magnus Blaster.
- 00:34
It's a mouthful, I know, that's the toy you wanted.
- 00:37
The toy had no tag, no receipt.
- 00:39
It was as if it appeared out of thin air.
- 00:41
The boy maintained the toy had been brought by magic,
- 00:44
by a mysterious man named Chris.
- 00:47
But I had to ask myself, could Chris really have done this?
- 00:51
And if so, how?
- 00:59
This is a Global Soundlink prepaid call from Chris Kringle and Alf at the North Pole.
- 01:10
Toys just appear at our house, not just this year, every year.
- 01:16
And you're not buying them.
- 01:18
that's Jennifer the boy's mother she's actually the one who contacted me about
- 01:24
this story she sides with her son saying that she wasn't responsible for the gift
- 01:29
that Chris did it that he snuck into her house in the middle of the night and
- 01:33
just left things she says she even has proof I left the cookies okay and when I
- 01:41
woke up they were gone and nobody followed up with you on this no Wow
- 01:48
For the past year, I've been talking to Chris, a thousand-year-old toy maker who lives up north.
- 01:54
It should be noted that Chris is part of a population who identify themselves as elves.
- 01:59
They're a minority in the United States, often looked at as shifty, secretive.
- 02:04
But I'll get to that later.
- 02:06
Chris says that he not only left the toy for the boy in Baltimore,
- 02:09
but he leaves millions of toys for kids around the world.
- 02:12
And he does it in one night.
- 02:14
I know, shocking, right?
- 02:15
You know it's like you said you hit every house I mean like you understand
- 02:23
that's that's hard for people to swallow right you know what I mean Chris
- 02:30
me or not,
- 02:31
but I know it's real, okay?
- 02:35
Chris
- 02:35
would
- 02:35
get like this sometimes about the more unbelievable parts of a story but I
- 02:41
guess he was right how do you explain these things it's just you you said you
- 02:47
You hit every town, like, you understand.
- 02:50
That's hard for people to swallow, right?
- 02:53
You know what I mean?
- 02:54
Yeah, I understand.
- 02:54
that. I get that, you know, but for me, what it comes down to is, like, Christmas magic.
- 03:01
Yeah.
- 03:01
I mean, I don't know what else to say, I just don't know
- 03:04
What to say, you know?
- 03:07
I had to follow up on this.
- 03:08
It just seemed so outlandish.
- 03:11
So I called my friend David,
- 03:13
who's been delivering packages for 12 years.
- 03:15
The same kind of packages Chris would have been delivering.
- 03:18
What would the timeline be for someone
- 03:20
to deliver a series of presents throughout the world?
- 03:23
Like, is that even possible?
- 03:25
No, I don't think so.
- 03:26
Yeah.
- 03:26
I should mention that David works for UPS,
- 03:29
which would be in direct competition with Chris.
- 03:32
No, I've never seen anything like that.
- 03:34
Okay.
- 03:34
If he says he can do it, he's lying.
- 03:37
Okay.
- 03:37
Yeah.
- 03:38
So we attempted it.
- 03:39
My producer Dana and I built a sleigh.
- 03:42
Couldn't get rain gear, so we got a small horse.
- 03:45
Needless to say, it went badly.
- 03:47
The horse wouldn't even fly.
- 03:49
I mean, we tried this.
- 03:51
We didn't even get close, you know?
- 03:53
But you didn't have my reindeer, you know what I'm saying?
- 03:56
Like, magic reindeer only know where I'm at.
- 03:59
You know, regular people can't just make a reindeer fly.
- 04:02
You know what I'm saying?
- 04:02
Yeah.
- 04:03
Yeah.
- 04:04
This is my biggest problem with Chris's story.
- 04:07
I understand hitting one town overnight, maybe two.
- 04:11
But every town in the world just didn't seem right.
- 04:15
That brings us to Jingle.
- 04:17
Jingle's an elf who claims he was with Chris on December 25, 1999.
- 04:21
He says they drove around, got high, hung out.
- 04:25
That's it.
- 04:26
No presents.
- 04:27
No flying.
- 04:28
Jingle was the prosecution's star witness in a trial against Chris on 34th Street a
- 04:33
few years ago.
- 04:34
Here's a recording of defense attorney Adina Hernandez cross-examining Jingle back then.
- 04:40
Now, Jingle, since the other 14, that grass was magic.
- 04:51
Ma'am, I could not...
- 04:52
You never! Not once!
- 04:54
No, ma'am.
- 04:56
So if Jingle didn't see Chris leave the present, did anyone?
- 05:03
Maybe there are people out there who claim they've seen Chris leave lots of presents.
- 05:08
Maybe they've written him letters.
- 05:10
Maybe they've sat on his lap.
- 05:12
And then there's the Nisha call.
- 05:14
Next time on Serial.
- 05:20
It's Mel King.
- 05:22
What?
The rabbit hole continues
