The premise

Here’s the bit.

Drew and Andy stop at a bright East Portland cafe for coffee and spot a sign for vegan, gender-neutral gingerbread people. They press the patient barista on why the cookies no longer count as men, calling the change sexism and a kind of castration, while he explains that a cookie doesn't need a gender. Their argument drifts into laments that boys have no baked goods to look up to and that anything male is now treated as scary. The pair then set up their own sidewalk cart selling unapologetically male gingerbread men, complete with anatomical details, to a passerby who keeps walking.

Say it with us

Highly quotable.

We just thought a cookie doesn't need a gender.

There is no cookie for a little boy to look up to, okay?

Everything male now is like, bad. Ooh, scary, it's male.

A little extra

Notes from the archive.

Drew and Andy recur through Portlandia's seventh season: they debut asking what about men in "Carrie Dates a Hunk", plan a funeral in "Fred's Cell Phone Company", take on gingerbread here in "Separation Anxiety" and later host a film festival in "Friend Replacement".

The rabbit hole continues

One more couldn’t hurt.
