The premise

Here’s the bit.

In a North Portland cinema, Drew and Andy welcome a room full of men to their inaugural Men's Film Festival, warning that male filmmakers are in crisis and their VHS legacy needs saving. Drawing names from a fishbowl of anonymous suggestions, they champion Brian De Palma to a teenage audience member who has never heard of him and keep getting distracted by Kathryn Bigelow, even improvising a domestic scene about her. Their reading of Terminator 2 turns into a complaint that Schwarzenegger sets unrealistic body standards for men, an unwelcome Point Break entry exposes another Bigelow film, and they close by claiming credit for movie-theater popcorn on behalf of all men.

Meet the cast. 2

Say it with us

Highly quotable.

It takes people power and manpower in a very literal sense.

We will not let his voice be silenced.

By the way, that popcorn you're eating, invented by men.

    Andy ?

Thanks so much for coming, showing interest in the first-ever Men's Film Festival.

  2. 00:08

    Drew

That's right. Celebrating the accomplishments of men. Men filmmakers.

  3. 00:11

    Andy ?

We're in a crisis, you guys. I'm sure you know that. If you look at any newspaper, blog, television show, what do we hear about?

  4. 00:20

    Drew ?

Women in film. We've got to preserve films made by men. A lot of them are just on VHS tapes. And we have to preserve it, and it takes us to do it. it takes people power and manpower in a very literal sense.

  5. 00:33

    Andy ?

So we have taken your anonymous suggestions and we're gonna go through and pick out some films to show and some directors to showcase.

  6. 00:41

    Drew ?

I see the name Brian De Palma. Have you heard of Brian De Palma?

  7. 00:47

No. No. I was born in 2003.

  8. 00:50

    Drew ?

So you've probably only heard about female film directors. That's just- Catherine Bigelow.

  9. 00:54

    Andy ?

    Yeah, Catherine Bigelow.

  10. 00:54

Dad, what do we have for breakfast?

  11. 00:56

Oh, Catherine Bigelow made a movie last night, so I went to go see that.

  12. 01:00

Oh, okay. Okay. Will you drop me off at school?

  13. 01:02

Well, yeah, but tonight is the Catherine Bigelow movie.

  14. 01:04

    Drew ?

Brian De Palma was this guy worked overtime to make movies. Carrie, The Untouchables. Yeah. Scarface. Do you guys know these movies?

  15. 01:14

    No, not so much.

  16. 01:14

    Drew ?

Yeah. Well, we're gonna educate you.

  17. 01:16

    Andy ?

We will not let his voice be silenced.

  18. 01:18

    Drew ?

    Okay, Terminator 2.

  19. 01:22

    Andy

This is a movie about a boy and his robot friend.

  20. 01:26

    Drew ?

I think that the Arnold Schwarzenegger character is an unrealistic expectation for men. Because what's wrong with a little bit of this? You know? Why does everything have to be so fit? I mean, that's not real.

  21. 01:38

    Drew ?

All right. Point Break. Who put that in here?

  22. 01:42

    Andy ?

Do you know who directed Point Break, buddy?

  23. 01:44

    No?

  24. 01:45

    Drew ?

    Catherine Bigelow.

  25. 01:45

    Andy ?

Catherine Bigelow. It's a good movie. We're just saying that there's a lot, so many female film directors, right? We're just here to celebrate a couple of guys that are out there, right?

  26. 01:55

    Drew

So think about that for a little while. By the way, that popcorn you're eating, invented by men. It was a man's idea to put popcorn in movie theaters.

  27. 02:01

    Why?

  28. 02:02

    Drew ?

It's quiet to eat. I don't think a woman would have invented that.
