The premise

Here’s the bit.

Ken returns from Yorkshire to visit his parents in London, where his father treats the young man’s coal-mining career as a betrayal. The father describes his own life as a playwright as exhausting labour, while Ken sees the family’s cultural pursuits as an unhealthy indulgence. His mother tries to keep the peace as their argument builds toward an attack of writer’s cramp. After Ken leaves, his father begins to see theatrical potential in the quarrel.
