The San Diego Mindset
The setup
The premise
Here’s the bit.
Gloomy black-and-white testimonials recall how miserable life was on the San Diego Diet, until its bespectacled spokesman Dr. Sandrew Starr, now noticeably heavier, unveils its replacement before a cheering crowd. He explains that staying thin made him depressed and dependent on pills, while eating whatever he craved cured everything, and his converts chant about going to San Diego in their minds. Backed by cheap green-screen backdrops of pyramids, outer space and a mountaintop, he offers ever-shakier proof that indulgence is ancient wisdom: pharaohs ate favorite foods before big decisions, Abraham Lincoln ate a meal after freeing the slaves, and aliens gorge on spaceship banquets because humans taste like ice cream to them.

Say it with us
Highly quotable.
When I was on the San Diego Diet, I was thin and sad.
When Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves and made this country equal, he ate a meal.
Why do you think those aliens are always trying to eat humans? Because humans are ice cream to aliens.

Notes from the archive.
Reviewing the second-season episode "Finger Magnets" for The A.V. Club, David Sims said he did not know what to make of the San Diego Mindset character, suggesting it spoofed a Los Angeles phenomenon he did not understand.
