The premise

Here’s the bit.

Kevin grunts and mumbles his way through dinner with his parents Dave and Sheila, then tries to slip off to his bedroom with an armful of food when his friend Perry turns up. His parents insist both boys sit down, and Perry is shy and impeccably polite to Mr and Mrs Patterson while Kevin seethes. Dave's attempts to chat about pop music and his own first teenage romance leave Kevin writhing with embarrassment, and the parents' praise for well-mannered Perry tips him over the edge. When Perry's mother phones, Kevin is suddenly courteous to her while Perry turns on his own parent just as Kevin does on his; after Perry politely leaves, Kevin accuses his parents of preferring his friend and storms off to sulk like a martyr in his bedroom.

Say it with us

Highly quotable.

Just call us Dave and Sheila.

Why can't you be a nice, polite boy like Perry?

I wish I'd never been born!

A little extra

Notes from the archive.

Perry grew out of Kathy Burke's "Perry the Pre-pubescent Schoolboy" character from Channel 4's The Last Resort; Kevin and Perry later headlined the 2000 film Kevin & Perry Go Large.
