The premise

Here’s the bit.

In a crowded Salem courtroom, a magistrate asks a witness to recount what she saw while finishing her overnight chores. She describes finding Goody Hobbs, now locked in the stocks, perched on a log in the moonlight with no sewing, milking or birthing in hand, simply letting her mind drift. The gallery gasps at the idea of a woman enjoying free time, and Hobbs only makes matters worse by explaining her idle thoughts in loving detail. When the witness admits that the sight made her envious, the magistrate sentences her to the stocks as well, where both women discover that being restrained is the first real rest they have ever had. The rest of the women in the room promptly confess to envy and scramble to be locked up too.

Say it with us

Highly quotable.

Oh, it feels dreadfully wicked even to say it. Free time.

This is the most down time I've had since I was a wee babe.

The rabbit hole continues

One more couldn’t hurt.
