What "The Sex Talk" Looks Like Now
The setup
The premise
Here’s the bit.
As his son heads out to pick up his homecoming date, a father stops him for an overdue talk about sex. The plan unravels almost immediately: every time Dad reaches for the familiar boys-and-girls script, the boy corrects him with the language of gender identity, consent and sexual diversity he has absorbed in health class, demanding definitions and raising scenarios his flustered father never considered. Each attempt to steer back to basics only invites more cross-examination, until Dad gives up, begs never to discuss anything again and shoos him out the door. A tender moment as the boy asks how he looks is undone by one more correction, and the father finally snaps and orders him out of the house.

- 00:01
Dad
Oh, hold on just a minute there, Buster.
- 00:05
Colin
Dad, I'm supposed to pick up Emily in like ten minutes. I gotta go.
- 00:08
Dad
Emily can wait for a little bit, can't she? You got a minute to talk to your old man, don't you? Have a seat. Ah. You know, son, you're not a kid anymore.
- 00:22
Colin
Oh, no, I go to health class, Dad. I already know all this stuff.
- 00:25
Dad
Well, they don't teach you about everything in health class. Okay, Mr. Samari-Banz? So just listen. When boys and girls get a little older, they start getting interested in one another.
- 00:35
Colin
You know and non-binary people, agendered, intergendered, FTX, genderfluid people.
- 00:42
Dad
What?
- 00:43
Colin
There's more than just boys and girls now, dad. And they're not girls, they're women.
- 00:47
Dad
Yeah, okay, sure. My point is that sex is a very important decision.
- 00:56
Colin
How are you defining sex? Sex is different things to different people.
- 01:00
Dad
I guess when a penis goes into a vagina?
- 01:03
Colin
What if there's two men or two women or more?
- 01:07
Dad
More?
- 01:07
Colin
How would you define sex with multiple simultaneous partners? Or what if somebody's undergone genital reconstruction or is intersex?
- 01:14
Dad
No, but I'm just talking about normal, straight...
- 01:16
Colin
Normal? Come on, Dad.
- 01:18
Dad
Okay, here we go. Let me ask you this. Son, are you attracted to women?
- 01:22
Colin
Yes, but I'm young.
- 01:26
Dad
Is Emily a woman?
- 01:28
Colin
Biologically.
- 01:30
Dad
Okay, you're attracted to women. Emily's a woman. So if you were to have sex with Emily...
- 01:36
Colin
I wouldn't just have sex with Emily. We'd have to make that decision together. Homecoming's not an excuse to ignore consent.
- 01:42
Dad
I'm not saying to ignore consent. I never said ignore consent. You and Emily, right, consensually decide to have sex.
- 01:49
Colin
Vaginal?
- 01:50
Dad
Yes, vaginal.
- 01:51
Colin
Just the two of us?
- 01:51
Dad
How many people do you want? Yes, just the two of you, Colin.
- 01:54
Colin
And I'm playing the traditional male role?
- 01:56
Dad
Go to homecoming.
- 01:57
Colin
You seem like you really wanted to talk about this.
- 01:59
Dad
No, no, I don't want to talk about anything. Ever again.
- 02:01
Colin
So I can go.
- 02:02
Dad
Please do. Out. Thank you. Don't forget your corsage.
- 02:09
Colin
Hey, Dad.
- 02:10
Dad
Yeah?
- 02:11
Colin
How do I look?
- 02:15
Dad
You look very handsome, son.
- 02:18
Colin
That's gender coding, but...
- 02:19
Dad
Get out of my house! Have fun.
