The premise

Here’s the bit.

Chris the Crafty Cockney turns up on a woman's doorstep insisting he isn't a salesman: he is simply surveying the local houses for alarms and window grills because he plans to move into the area and wants to know how easy his work will be. When she reassures him that the street is friendly, quiet and almost crime-free, he is delighted, cheerfully announces that he is a thief who will steal anything, and runs through his signature boasts while she laughs it off as a joke and even joins in. After a warm goodbye she shuts the door, and Chris walks off with the large potted plant from her front step.

Say it with us

Highly quotable.

I'm thinking of moving round here, you see, and I'm having a little nose about, just to see how easy my life's going to be.

I mean, everyone's very friendly, it's very quiet, and touch wood, there's hardly any crime.

A little extra

Notes from the archive.

Two episodes later, Series 3 introduced Chris's cousin Cliff, the Crafty Copper, a police officer who makes the same boast that he will nick anyone.

The rabbit hole continues
