A VERY GOOD USE OF YOUR TIME.

The setup

Twenty-five minutes before showtime, four sketch writers scramble for one last idea, but every pitch drifts onto a subject too touchy to joke about.

The premise

Here’s the bit.

Needing one more sketch before the show goes on, Matt runs a frantic brainstorm in a cluttered writers' room. Whitney proposes staging a live birth, Mallory keeps slipping polio into her premises, and Jason, determined to make something about birds, acts out a wordless owl-and-penguin routine that ends with a feather laid on the floor. Matt rejects each pitch against a whiteboard list of topics deemed too sensitive, and a draw from the idea jar only produces another off-limits combination. At last Jason proposes that this scene could be the opening sketch, and the writers realize they are already in it.

Say it with us

Highly quotable.

I don't have any ideas, but I think the idea's golden.

Mallory, we have talked about this. We can't make jokes about diseases.

It literally flew into my head.

Behind the scenes

The people who made it.

A little extra

Notes from the archive.

The sketch opened the ninth episode of Studio C's first season. The writers' whiteboard of topics deemed too sensitive for jokes lists disease, Heath Ledger, racism, terrorism, dogs with disabilities and Michael Jackson.
