Ray McCooney: American Tourists
The setup
The premise
Here’s the bit.
The narrator recommends Scotland to holidaymakers as an American mother, her teenage son and her young daughter Kimberly wander into Ray McCooney's olde-worlde hotel hoping for afternoon tea. Ray greets them with his usual evasive riddles and a tune on his little pipe, then wheels out a cake trolley. When the mother explains that Kimberly is allergic to nuts and asks whether any of the cakes contain them, Ray's cryptic yes-or-no replies send her in circles. Eventually he settles the matter in his own way, holding each slice up to his ear as if the cake itself could tell him what is inside. When he reaches the chocolate cake, he announces that it wants a word with the son and hands it over, leaving the bewildered teenager listening to a slice of cake.
