Overly Competitive Trumpeters
The setup
The premise
Here’s the bit.
In a black-and-white jazz club, a dapper trumpeter in a plaid jacket and a rival in a pork-pie hat and round glasses take turns stepping forward during the band set, each answering the other with a more extreme display. Wailing, warbling runs give way to a solo that ends in shattering glass and to horns that look more mangled with every round, while the crowd cheers each escalation and the rest of the band looks on. The contest ends with the two men horn to horn, blowing frantically at each other until one last sustained note brings the room to applause.
