Dad’s Hollywood Secret

At Otis Carmichael’s funeral, his son Joseph honors a respected teacher and civil-rights advocate, then shares an old acting reel he has never watched. Joseph quietly returns the reel to the coffin and tries to steer the tribute back toward his father’s later achievements.

In a 2014 MediaCommons essay, film scholar Allyson Nadia Field discusses how the sketch uses racist Hollywood caricatures to complicate Otis’s public image.
