The setup
The premise
Here’s the bit.
Styled as a moody Twilight trailer, this Horrible Histories sketch sends a bonneted admirer to Lord Byron's candlelit castle, where every clue seems to point to a vampire: he shuns the daylight, keeps a wolf as a pet and drinks from a skull. When she begs him to admit what he really is, the truth is far less supernatural. Byron is simply a vain, pretentious poet who avoids the light because he thinks it makes him look fat, and after a few barbs about her looks she makes a quick exit rather than sit through his verse, leaving him to recite romantic poetry to a skull.

Highly quotable.
No, it's an actual wolf. He's my pet.
No, I'm just a really pretentious poet.
Everyone's a critic, aren't they?
A little extra
Notes from the archive.
The sketch's taste for exotic pets has a real basis: while a student at Trinity College, Cambridge, Byron kept a tame bear because college rules forbade pet dogs.
