The Speaking Alarm Clock
The setup
The premise
Here’s the bit.
Settling into bed, a man shows his partner his latest purchase: an alarm clock that wakes you with a message recorded in your own voice. He sets it for six ahead of an early start, but the clock refuses to stay quiet, repeatedly rousing him in the dark to check whether he is awake and to pose ever bigger questions about death, an afterlife for alarm clocks and life on other planets. The exhausted roofer finally loses his temper with his own voice, and by morning the clock, having been up all night thinking, has slept in itself.
