Lovecraftian Horror
The setup
The premise
Here’s the bit.
At the Burnistoun North Housing Office, a weary tenant reports that something beyond name or imagining has taken up residence in his basement. The officer behind the desk calmly works through his checklist: the address, a previous complaint about unearthly chanting from next door (since resolved, the neighbours having been carried off to the moon by cats), and what exactly the creature is and how big it might be. Every answer, from the impossible angles of the basement to the madness the thing inflicts on anyone who looks at it, defeats the paperwork, so the officer offers rat, squirrel and finally wasps as categories that will fit the form. When he suggests bringing the creature in to fill out the form itself, the tenant fears it would send him screaming into the abyss, so the officer hands over his own number for it to phone instead; moments later the phone rings, and as the officer takes the call his head is replaced by a featureless black pyramid.

Notes from the archive.
The tenant's complaints borrow the vocabulary of H. P. Lovecraft's cosmic or "eldritch" horror, in which entities too vast and incomprehensible to describe threaten the sanity of anyone who encounters them.
