The premise

Here’s the bit.

On the porch, Susan warns her boyfriend Tony that her bourgeois parents may not cope with his race and promises to choose him if it comes to that. Inside, Barry and Mrs. Carswell greet him warmly, ply him with punch and Rice Krispie squares, and even hand over Dad's prized armchair. Tony enjoys every minute, but Susan reads each courtesy as prejudice and keeps snapping back with loaded remarks about buses, guns and intelligence. When her parents only fuss over her, she storms out alone to Harlem, leaving Tony settled in with the Carswells, who learn he grew up in a quiet neighbourhood and has been to Harlem just once, in daylight.

Say it with us

Highly quotable.

Yes, Mother, the bus ride was fine. We sat at the front.

Dad, he's not armed.

Well, once, but in the daytime.

A little extra

Notes from the archive.

The fan episode guide KITHfan.org lists this sketch as "Interracial Couple." Scott Thompson plays Tony in dark makeup. In the original broadcast, the closing film of the episode's third Ping Pong segment dissolves straight into Susan and Tony arriving at the front door.
