The setup

A customer's hunt for a present for his aunt is chopped into a cliffhanger serial by a narrator who cannot stop teasing what happens next.

The premise

Here’s the bit.

Brian walks into a gift shop looking for something for his aunt, and the shopkeeper eventually offers him a knitted woollen dog. That is the whole story, but a breathless narrator turns it into a multi-part event, opening every segment with what is coming up, recapping what came before, rerunning the same few lines and asking whether Brian has come to the right place. The long-delayed payoff is a sudden family revelation between customer and shopkeeper, and only under the spoof end credits is the entire exchange finally played straight through, taking barely twenty seconds.

Notes from the archive.

Contemporary TV previews, including Metro's, read the sketch as a parody of the trails and recaps that pad out factual television.
