The premise

Here’s the bit.

In a dim Washington office in 1968, a pair of intelligence officials ask their top expert in misleading footage how to convince the Soviets that America has landed on the Moon (the real Mars missions being too secret to show). Her plan begins with building an enormous rocket, since everyone will want to know how the astronauts got there, and each follow-up question reveals another expense that the hoax cannot avoid, until the only remaining saving would be to fly to the Moon and film the fake landing there.

Say it with us

Highly quotable.

Do this right and the Cold War could be over by 1971.

Well, other than that it's mainly catering.

  1. 00:02

    Agent ?

Wouldn't it be great to make everyone think we'd landed on the moon?

  2. 00:05

    Agent ?

    That'd show the Soviets.

  3. 00:07

    Bespectacled Agent ?

    What would it show them?

  4. 00:08

    Agent

Well, they'd think we'd landed on the moon and they'd be all afraid. Do this right and the Cold War could be over by 1971.

  5. 00:15

    Bespectacled Agent

Why don't we just release the footage of the Mars landings?

  6. 00:18

    Agent

No, no, it's vitally important that we keep the successful mission to Mars a secret. But I've got a hunch that if we pretend to have landed on the moon, that will be in some way intimidating.

  7. 00:28

    Bespectacled Agent ?

    Will people believe us?

  8. 00:29

    Agent

Oh, I'm sure they will to the extent that we won't even need to bother to pay much attention to detail with regard to flags and shadows and so on You're the top spy in the Secret Service when it comes to misleading footage. What do you suggest?

  9. 00:42

    Top Spy

Well to start with of course, we'll need to build a massive rocket.

  10. 00:46

    Bespectacled Agent

Why we're not actually going to the moon So I thought that was the point. Have I got this wrong?

  11. 00:50

    Top Spy

We'll need a massive rocket because the first question people will ask when we show them the footage of the moon will be how did you get there so we'll have to be able to say we went in that massive rocket you saw

  12. 01:02

    Agent

so we're not actually going to make any kind of saving in terms of the cost of a massive rocket

  13. 01:06

    Top Spy

no but we will be making a saving on the cost of actually going to the moon

  14. 01:11

    Agent ?

true true and what costs are involved in actually going to the moon

  15. 01:15

    Top Spy

well the main one to be honest is the massive rocket

  16. 01:19

    Agent ?

    any others

  17. 01:22

    Top Spy

well other than that it's mainly catering

  18. 01:25

    Agent ?

so so we'll make a saving on that

  19. 01:27

    Top Spy

well no in fact it'll probably be more expensive to cater for an entire film crew for the duration of a shoot than it would be to feed three astronauts

  20. 01:38

    Agent

so i'm i'm just wondering we'll still have to build the massive rocket capable of going to the moon

  21. 01:44

    Top Spy

we will have to do that yes

  22. 01:45

    Agent

so so i was just thinking if if we've built the moon rocket Might it not be cheaper to just pop to the moon and fake the footage there?

  23. 01:55

    Top Spy

Fake the footage of the fake moon landing on the moon?

  24. 01:59

    Top Spy ?

    What if people found out?

  25. 02:01

    Bespectacled Agent

That's a risk we're just going to have to take.
