The setup

A recruiter has exactly one candidate for every senior vacancy at the firm: former tennis world number one Lindsay Davenport.

The premise

Here’s the bit.

Tim sits down with his recruiter Greg to fill several posts at his company, starting with an accountancy job. Greg proudly proposes the tennis player Lindsay Davenport and offers her Grand Slam titles, Olympic gold and height as qualifications, insisting the role needs dedication, fitness and good ground strokes. He suggests her again for head of marketing, and again for chief operating officer after Tim has expressly forbidden it, now warning that hiring her there would leave gaps in accountancy and marketing. Asked whether he has interviewed anyone else, Greg admits he abandoned the search after meeting her, then produces a hastily invented alternative whose description is suspiciously familiar, and Tim throws him out.

    Tim

So there are various roles which we're hoping to fill. I know you've been working jolly hard trying to come up with some suitable candidates. If we start with the accountancy position, because I think that's probably the most straightforward, what are your thoughts?

    Greg

    Tim

Right, I just wonder... I mean, take me with you here, Greg. In what way any of these things qualify her for an accountancy job? Are you really suggesting that working out your payroll is harder than winning Wimbledon?

  23. 01:57

    Greg

OK, well, business is about thinking outside the box and not always working to the brief you've been given. So I think I might be about to surprise you again when I say that I am going to say Lindsay Davenport. Now, I'll be honest with you, Tim, if you do go for Lindsay as Chief Operating Officer, there is one major drawback.
