Funny Chiropractor
The setup
The premise
Here’s the bit.
During a treatment, a chiropractor with a pronounced lisp learns that David Mitchell is a comedian and offers what he thinks are funny workplace stories: the word coccyx, and an assistant named Debbie who sometimes wears a hat. David, desperate for ideas, says the team will simply turn the conversation itself into a sketch, with Robert playing the chiropractor. The chiropractor worries he will be mocked with a cheap speech impediment, and David assures him they will only heighten reality a little, just as Debbie bursts in wearing an enormous feathered hat. Then a man stands up in the studio audience, introduces himself as David's real chiropractor, and walks onto the set to complain that the conversation never went like that and that his genuinely amusing stories were left out, before telling one that falls flat.
The funny people
Meet the cast. 4
Say it with us
Highly quotable.
This is great, coccyx, a hat. We'll certainly use both of those.
You're not gonna try and make me look ridiculous just to get a cheap laugh, or give me a gratuitous speech impediment.
That wasn't anything like the conversation we had in my office the other week.
A little extra
Notes from the archive.
Funny Chiropractor aired in the sixth and final episode of the first series, broadcast on BBC Two on 19 October 2006. The real chiropractor's supposedly hilarious anecdote involves the veteran British disc jockey Tony Blackburn.

David Mitchell
Yes, I suppose it is.
- 00:07
Chiropractor
Actually, there are a couple of funny things happening at chiropractors. You could probably use them in your comedy show.

David Mitchell

- 00:17
Chiropractor
Well, you probably have people suggesting stuff all the time.
- 00:20
David Mitchell

Well, that wasn't... It That wasn't anything like the conversation we had in my office the other week. For a start, I don't sound anything like that. Sorry. And secondly, while I was easing off his sciatic nerve, I told David Mitchell several genuinely amusing chiropractic stories. Like the time I was treating Tony Blackburn, afterwards he said to me if anyone hears the real disc jockey it's you
