The premise

Here’s the bit.

A walker on top of the white cliffs stops at Barry Crisp's latest attraction: a deckchair, a hand-painted sign and the chance to jump off a cliff for two pounds. Barry sells it with a rapturous description of the wind, the sea view and distant lands on the horizon, then offers only vague advice about taking a good run-up. When the customer mentions a fear of heights and asks whether he will get hurt, Barry's reassurances swing between breezy and evasive, and he admits he would rather not look at what happens to his customers. Asked how to climb back up for another go, he explains that people generally find one jump is plenty. Satisfied, the customer pays, takes a run-up and leaps off the edge, leaving Barry alone on the clifftop.

The funny people

Meet the cast. 2

Say it with us

Highly quotable.

Jump off a cliff, it's absolutely fine.

People usually find that once is enough, actually.

I mean, it is fun, but you only need the one.

    Barry's Punter

So, what's this? Jump off a cliff, two pounds?

  2. 00:05

    Barry Crisp

    That's it, yeah.

  3. 00:06

    Barry's Punter

    Sounds exciting.

  4. 00:07

    Barry Crisp

Oh, yeah, can't beat it. Jump off a cliff, wind through your hair, beautiful panorama of the sea, waves crashing on the rocks beneath you, little boats in the harbour to the east and to the west, the Atlantic, with waves as high as hills and the briny scent of trade, possibility, other lands. Two quid.

  5. 00:29

    Barry's Punter

What a bargain. Right, so what do I do?

  6. 00:31

    Barry Crisp

Well, take a good run up, so you can push yourself good and far off the edge, and then just see how the mood takes you.

  7. 00:38

    Barry's Punter

Great. I mean, I am a bit nervous of heights. Does that matter?

  8. 00:42

    Barry Crisp

Well, I'll be honest with you, it's not ideal. Depends how bad you got it, cos if it's just a few butterflies, I say go for it. Cos the good thing is that while there is a bit of a height thing to start with, that does get better quite quickly.

  9. 00:55

    Barry's Punter

    Right. But it's all fine?

  10. 00:57

    Barry Crisp

Oh, yeah, yeah, it's all fine. Jump off a cliff, it's absolutely fine.

  11. 01:00

    Barry's Punter ?

I won't get hurt. Really? Oh, that's good. What?

  12. 01:05

    Barry Crisp

No, it's just some people get a bit bruised, I imagine. I mean, I don't know. I prefer not to look.

  13. 01:14

    Barry's Punter

So, how do I find my way back up if I want to do it again?

  14. 01:17

    Barry Crisp

Er, people usually find that once is enough, actually. I mean, it is fun, but you only need the one.

  15. 01:24

    Barry's Punter ?

    Like a hot chocolate?

  16. 01:26

    Barry Crisp ?

    Yeah.

  17. 01:27

    Barry's Punter

OK, well, that's one to jump off a cliff, then, please.

  18. 01:30

    Barry Crisp ?

    and that'll be two quid

  19. 01:31

you're actually doing it yeah okay try

  20. 01:47

    Barry Crisp ?

    Try to stop him

The rabbit hole continues

One more couldn’t hurt.
