The premise

Here’s the bit.

Host Jeff Edwards welcomes viewers to Shoot at the Stars, a daytime game show where the prize is a chance to open fire on famous guests. He introduces a panel of fading television and stage personalities, John Rutter, Chalo and crooner Robert Groulet, with backhanded compliments, then brings out schoolteacher Tom Gleason as the contestant. Tom must complete a suggestive fill-in-the-blank sentence and match a chosen celebrity's written answer; failing to match would simply pay out the cash, but after a miss with Chalo, Tom's prim answer lines up with John Rutter's card. Tom collects the money and a scoped rifle, steps behind the shooting-gallery counter and picks off all three stars as they dance in panic, while the host cheerfully thanks everyone for playing and signs off until tomorrow.

Notes from the archive.

The SCTV Guide identifies the three celebrity guests as send-ups of John Ritter, Charo and Robert Goulet. The sketch opened the November 1978 episode in which Edith Prickley was named SCTV's new station manager.
